Rescue. Rehabilitate. Rehome.
Hand-Me Down Hounds Rescue was created to save the abused, abandoned and neglected dogs of Texas.

Our RoleEach dog we take in is entirely vetted, rehabilitated in foster homes, and leave on transports to less populated areas of the country. We are an all-breed rescue where we hold a strong stance against breeding and BSL laws. To continue our goal of rescue and transport, we need your support!

What does Heartworm Treated Mean?
Not only are the dogs overpopulated in Texas, but so are the mosquitos! Because of the climate in Texas, and many other southern states, mosquitoes carry and spread diseases from one dog to another. Unfortunately, heartworm is one of these diseases- left untreated this can become deadly. Luckily, it is not directly contagious between dogs, only when mosquitos get involved.
We test all of our dogs over the age of 6 months (the disease takes 7 months to show on a test). Any dog that is negative receives heartworm prevention in order to prevent and kill baby worms in the blood system that may be undetectable on tests. Any dog that tests positive is treated with multiple injections of Melarsomine and receive oral medications under the supervision of a veterinarian. Each dog treated should be retested in 9 months to be sure they are free and clear. 99% of dogs treated will be negative in 6-9 months after treatment! |
